Riff Trax Live 2 and Turkey week

Its Turkey Week, so what better way to celebrate than to make fun of turkeys via MST3k. MST3k is mystery science theater 3000. It was a show that made fun of bad movies. This week I'll be listing my top 10 favorite episodes of the show.

There will also be a riff trax live show on December 16th and 17th. I'm planning on attending the 17th show at Tinseltown if anyone wants to tag along.

al has the flu but which flu is it?

Well the doctor has ordered me to stay home at least until Thursday while they determine if I have swine flu or flu flu. I would take this time to tackle the huge blog backlog but I feel like poodoo. Maybe tomorrow.

So instead I've been finishing up tv series online. I just wrapped up Spectacular Spiderman (so good) and Wolverine and the X-Men. Next up is One Piece. Any other shows I should get caught up on while I have the time?

One Piece is but a dream

Everyone has dreams. Some of us chase them and some of us put them off for another day that never comes. And still fewer actually achieve their dreams.

Luffy's crew are all chasing their own dreams. And they won't stop until they achieve them.

Luffy wants to be King of the Pirates. In fact he'll tell you this in practically every episode. Zoro wants to be the greatest swordsman. Nami wants... I'll let you find out the other dreams.

The crew won't let anything get in their way but the dreams don't come without a price.

But maybe just maybe they'll find what they are looking for at the end of their voyage

and we'll be there rooting them on. Well I don't know about you but I'll be there.

Tomorrow we talk about Luffy's Nakama. What's a Nakama? Tune in tomorrow.

The tragedy of One Piece

I'm not going to lie to you. One Piece can be downright silly. From snail phones to robots wearing speedos, the world of One Piece can be just plain nutty. But don't let that fool you. Like any good show, One Piece can have you laughing one moment and crying the next.

Every crew member on One Piece has a tragic past that affects their current motivations. Luffy's recklessness hurt someone he admired. Zoro made a promise that he can never fulfill. Usopp learned to lie to protect someone he loved. Sanji learned about true sacrifice. And Nami learned about doing what you hate to protect the ones you love.

I know I'm being vague on the details but I don't want to ruin it. Nami's backstory in particular is incredibly powerful.

Each one of these moments molded and shaped the crew into the people they are today. And out of these tragedies, the crew formed their life goals.

Which is what tomorrow is about, dreams.

An Overview of One Piece

Since I've started this blog, I've heaped tons of praise on a japanese manga/anime called One Piece. Unfortunately, among my friends it seems like I'm the only one who watches it. I know many of you all saw the horribly edited Saturday morning version. I'm not talking about that version... I'm talking about the uncut version.

One Piece is better than Naruto. Its better than Dragon Ball Z. Its better that Full Metal Alchemist. Well... maybe not Full Metal Alchemist... but its pretty close.

All of this week I'm going to highlight why this show is so awesome. And hopefully by the end of the week you'll give it a chance.

One Piece tells the story of Gold Rogers, the king of the pirates. At his execution he told the world that he left all of this treasure in One Piece. So a new age of pirates was born.

One of those pirates is Monkey D. Luffy.

Luffy proclaims to anyone who will listen that he is going to be King of the pirates. Unfortunately he has no ship and more importantly no crew. So begins his quest.

This week I will only talk about the initial crew members of the Strawhat Pirates. There are many more crew members but I don't want to ruin the surprises along the way.

Luffy is the captain of the crew. He's goofy and reckless but can become serious at the drop of a hat. He also has a huge appetite. Luffy ate the gum gum fruit so he can stretch his body.

Zoro is the swordsman of the crew. He's a former bounty hunter and deadly serious. He has no sense of direction and usually sleeps off his wounds. Zoro uses a three sword style.

Nami is the ship's navigator. She's a thief and only cares about treasure. She can detect changes in the weather before they happen. She has no special abilities (at first)

Usopp is the crew's marksman. He's very cowardly and tells lies all the times (hence the long nose). He spends his time creating weapons and explosives.

Sanji is the chef of the crew. He always has his trademark cigarette and instantly falls in love with any woman he sees. He fights with his feet so he won't damage his hands.

Tomorrow we'll get into the tragic pasts of the Strawhats and find out just what motivates them.

Looney Bay: The Great Candy Commission

Its missions week in Looney Bay.

Lesson: The Great Commission

Script: The Amazing Who missed Halloween due to the time change, so he asked Moody to give out free candy to everyone he saw. The Devil arrives and convinces Moody not to give out candy. Reasons included "They'll make fun of you", "He doesn't deserve candy", "He's different than you". At the end Moody missed out on great rewards because he didn't give out the free gift.

Thoughts: I hate to toot my own horn but this was a good script. Some weeks I write scripts and they go nowhere but this one was clear and on point.

Oh and John did a killer magic trick this week. I saw a few kid's heads explode. It was crazy.

Goofs: None

Overview: Good week.

Looney Bay: Black Light Sunday

This week was the annual Black light sunday where we replace the regular light blubs with black light bulbs. We then play Nightmare before Christmas music. Its fun watching your retinas melt out of your head.

Lesson: It was inside that counts

Script: Sam makes fun of Mashed Potatoes. Hootenanny makes inside out potion that makes you change into what you are on the inside. The Clown poisons Sam and Red with the inside out potion. Sam turns into a goblin and Red turns into Nemo?

Thoughts: I always slip into Al Gore mode when I bring out Mashed Potatoes since they have the same voice. He started preaching about carbon emissions from jack-o-lanterns and underwear. I think its John's favorite character.

We also had Joker and Harley Quinn take over the children's church. Bat Kid showed up to stop them and was laughed out of the building. And then Super Granny beat Joker with a cane. No really.

Blunders: Nothing to report other than Jack Skellington singing during the prayer.

Overall: It was fun but I'm glad its over.

What ever happened to Cartoon Network?

Disney bought Marvel and Nickelodeon bought the ninja turtles. So where does that leave Cartoon Network?

In a lot of trouble. Have you seen their lineup lately? Its mostly crummy reality shows and total drama whatever. True they have Batman: Brave and the Bold and Star Wars the Clone Wars... but Cartoon Network is nowhere near as great as it once was.

At least they still have Naruto...

Or not...

Naruto Shippuden starts on Disney XD this wednesday.

ruh roh.

Did someone say blogathon?

Okay I've let the blog get way behind but I'm going to fix that in our first (and hopefully last) blogathon. Throughout the day Saturday I wll be posting most (if not all) of the missing blog posts. I'm over 30 posts behind so I've got a lot to talk about. There will also be a special post for last Tuesday with a big announcement.

Unless... life gets in the way once again Saturday in which case I'm going to become Amish and move to Tokyo.

See you Saturday.

Forced Lunches

Well my overlords at work have decided to follow state law and make us take a 30 minute lunch whether we want to or not.

What will I do with this new found free time?

ONE PIECE!

I've been watching the Thriller Bark saga and it is just addictive zany action. I love it, can't get enough!

Whatever happened to AlCave Jones?

And we're back!!!

Wow has it been 19 days since an update. Sorry about that. Overtime, computer viruses and people in the hospital kind of took precedence over the blog.

It has been my goal since July to have a blog update for every day. And that's still the goal. Over the next few weeks I will be doing "Missing Posts" for the days I missed. Some of them will be old news like Patrick Swayze dying and September 11th and what not. These are the posts I would have made that day if I had time.

When I finish making all 19 Missing Posts, I'll post an index list for easy access.

Thank you for your patience.

Looney Bay: Toy Circus

This week John tried to break all of my transformers toys... I mean collectibles.

Lesson: Fruit of the Spirit (Joy)

Script: The mysteriously diabolical clown, opened a toystore and started selling transformers. Who knows where he go them from but I'm sure it was illegal. Sam starts begging Herm for money because he has to have the newest figure. But the figures don't bring joy and he has to buy another and another and another.

adlibs: I failed to realize that Sam wouldn't be able to pick up the toys since his hands didn't work so he had to bite all the toys. So we started adlibing that Sam was eating the transformers. Also we got to use the drawbridge to display the toys! We never use the drawbridge!

Blunders: John dropped a couple of the transformers and they exploded into pieces. Luckily the newer transformers just pop back together. The old ones from the 80's would have been unable to be fixed.

Overall: Good day

What are time traveling posts?

I try and have a new post day for every day of the week. Time traveling posts happen when I'm away from the computer and can't make that day's post. This weekend was full of time traveling posts because I had a pretty busy three day week.

And now you know...

eleven44

Sometime last week little black and white signs with the phrase "eleven44.org" started popping up all over Louisville. I was curious so I visited the site. There's a mysterious countdown and a clue reading "ten4eleven44". There are also links to facebook and twitter.

What could it mean?

At first I thought it was a radio station since ten-4 is radio talk, but that doesn't work. AM stations end in 0 and FM stations are odd numbers.

Someone suggested that its the time of a church service... 11:44. Sounds weird but I guess plausible.

Maybe its a pattern, ten4, eleven44, twelve444?

Here is my guess. If you take ten4eleven44 and turn it into calculator upside talk you get: hhllhol or Hellhole. I knew it! Louisville is on top of a Hellmouth that is going to open in October. Someone call Buffy!

Christmas draws near

Today on the way to school, I was trying to point out to Jackson how close Christmas was. Now I'm not sure if the following is a failure on the public schools or on myself as his parent. More likely than not Jackson was just being silly.

Me: Jackson, do you know what comes after September?

Jackson: August.

Me: No, October. Do you know what's after October.

Jackson: Easter!

Me: No, Halloween. Do you know what's after Halloween?

Jackson: Easter!

Me: No! November. Do you know what's after November?

Jackson: Easter!

Me: No! Not Easter! Thanksgiving. Do you know what's after Thanksgiving?

Jackson: Easter!

Me: No, December! Do you know what's after December?

Jackson: Christmas!

Me: Right.

Jackson: And then Easter!

Me: Oh forget it.

the epic meeting

Way back on October 31st, 2001, I got to meet Bruce Campbell at a book signing. I realized some of my newer friends have never seen the picture of this epic meeting. So here it is in all its glory.

Geez... I look scared to death.

DISNEY BUYS MARVEL

Well that was unexpected.

The AlCave Action News Team presents our in depth coverage of this amazing announcement. In other words we make idle speculation that we can no way prove and is probably very, very wrong.

This is huge news, a win win. I'm hopeful that Disney will leave the comic book side of things alone. But there's an issue. A lot of Marvel's properties are at different movie studios.

Sony has Spider-man.
Fox has X-Men, Fantastic Four, Daredevil
Marvel Studios/Paramount have Captain America, Thor, Iron man, Antman, Hulk, and the Avengers.
New Line has Blade.
Lions Gate has Punisher.
Columbia Pictures has Ghost Rider.

Its a logistical nightmare. I'm sure Disney is going to do whatever it takes to get these movies back when contracts expire. So all of the heavy hitters are off the table, where does that leave Disney?

With a great library of secondary characters:

She Hulk
New warriors
Runaways
Thunderbolts
Exiles
Cloak and Dagger
Dr. Strange
The Inhumans
Agents of Atlas
Iron Fist
Luke Cage
Spider-Woman
Moon Knight

And that's just off the top of my head. Disney has 5,000 characters to choose from! 5,000!

Once they get the rights back from the other movie studios we could see a Secret Wars movie. Something that seemed impossible just a few days ago.

But wait there's more. There was a line of comics called Cross Gen that went under a few years ago. Guess who bought them? That's right Disney.

So does this mean that we'll see Disney comics produced by Marvel? Not necessarily. Disney has a deal in place right now with Boom! Studios. I wouldn't be surprised if BOOM! Studios isn't bought my Marvel/Disney in the near future.

As a Marvel Zombie, I'm pretty excited (and a little frightened) about this. The next few years for Marvel are going to be very interesting.

Looney Bay: Hate Monster In Training

Was today a day of doom? Maybe...

Lesson: Fruits of the spirit (Love)

Script: Java and Lenny flood the town so everyone moves in with Sam and Herm. Herm gets very stressed. The Hate Monster decides that this is the perfect time to spread hatred. Unfortunately his son Winky, doesn't want to be a hate monster. He wants to be a balloonist and fire weiner dogs out of a canon at passing balloons. Herm loses it after all his stuff is broke so he kicks everyone out. Winky then offers to help Herm clean up, spreading love instead of hate.

Thoughts: Winky is a great addition to the cast. He talks like one of the Beatles. We'll definately be seeing him again.

Adlibs/blunders: Things were going along great until Ben went off script and screamed OMG. A big no no. Lenny tried to distract the kids by diving over the wall. Unfortunately none of the kids really reacted to Ben's OMG outburst. Kinda sad really.

Oh and Jonathan went crazy with adlibs again at the end of the script. I think he has tourettes.

Overall: Great day until Ben's outburst.

I'm eagerly awaiting an upcoming TMNT special Turtles Forever. Its a crossover between the 1987 cartoon and the 2003 series. Basically the final episode for both series. They are still debating if it will be a tv or a direct to dvd special. Here's a sweet poster for it.

Looney Bay: Masters of Hiccup-fu

Another week, another miracle of Jesus. I'm the only person who can make miracles sound ho-hum. :p

Biblical Lesson: Jesus heals the sick.

Script: Herm's perfect day is ruined by horrible hiccups. The other puppets offer a variety of solutions from being fired out of a catapult to sniffing a shark tail. Herm asks for a miracle but the frog tells him the only one who can perform miracles is Jesus.

Thoughts: Jesus did some amazing things in the Bible, but they are hard to write scripts around. I had thought about doing a script about Bogus the Possum being a faith healer before finally settling on Herm gets the hiccups. Hopefully next week we'll do something out of the old testament.

Ad Libs/Blunders: Herm's hiccups got rather ridiculous. Jonathan tried to adlib with the frog, it made no sense whatsoever.

Overall: Okay day.

You can't keep a good anime down

There's a new anime based on Fullmetal Alchemist airing in japan. Its called Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Unlike the original anime, this one closely follows the plot of the manga. We have no clue when these will be dubbed and brought to America.

Fortunately for you, you can watch them now in Japanese and subbed at the official site!

Check it out

You can also view the current One Piece episodes as well!

Fun Fact 08/21/2009

Forgot to mention, before the RiffTrax Live they were showing the typical movie facts and mistakes.

So here's what one said:

Movie Mistakes:

Casting Keanu Reaves in "The Day the Earth Stood Still"

There were other silly facts/mistakes but that was the best one.

Adding To My List

Went to Riff Trax Live last night. It was a blast!

They opened with footage of the theater in Nashville, showing the crowd and what not. Then the riff crew came out and did introductions and assured us this was all really live and anything could happen or go wrong.

We then watched the short The Flying Stewardess. It was an awful short about how to be a stewardess but the riff crew made it oh so hilarious.

They then gave away an IPod.

We then watched a commercial for the Flour & Mill convention. It was hilarious and created by the guys over at somethingawful.com.

We then had 2 songs from Jonathan Coulton: The Future Soon and Re: Your Brains. It was fun having a zombie sing along with the all theaters across the nation while Kevin Murphy tried to act like a zombie.

We then had another somethingawful commercial for BerryWatch, a security system for your strawberries, blueberries, etc.

Then the rifftones came out and sang "Plans 1-9 from Outer Space".

Finally we had the riffing of Plan 9 from Outer Space. It was fun watching the riffers get tickled at certain points during the movie. The movie is so bad, you can't help but laugh.

A really fun night and I would encourage you to go next time if you missed it. There were a few technical hiccups. We lost the live feed a few times, but only for a second or two.

I guess I can add another Great Moments in Al History to my list:

1. Met Snoopy
2. Fed Shamu the whale
3. Saw Zsa Zsa Gabor in person though no one believes me (or was it Eva)
4. Rode the Scooby Zoom
5. Saw the naked cowboy and some guy covered in tin foil in time square
6. Met Bruce Campbell
7. Mannheim Steamroller concert.
8. Midnight showing of Star Wars Episode 3, opening night.
9. Weird Al concert.
10. Riff Trax live.

Fun Fact of the Day

Today we look at a fun fact from my favorite disney movie, Old Yeller.

They had to film the finale of Old Yeller 17 times, because Tommy Kirk kept wounding the dogs and not getting a kill shot.

Okay it was joke... chill out! I never liked your stupid movie anyway. Geez.

Stupid dog.

Riff Trax Reminder

Bought my tickets tonight for Riff Trax. Remember its this Thursday night. For those who don't know, Riff Trax are made by some former members of MST3k. They are basically commentary tracks for popular movies that are riffing the movie.

Don't miss it or you'll have to answer to these guys.

Looney Bay: The Dead Parrot Script

This week we tackle the tricky subject of raising people from the dead

Biblical Lesson: Jesus raises Lazareth from the dead.

Script: Baby dinosaur is lonely and upset that he is the last of the dinosaurs. Victor Vulture comes up with a scheme to trick baby dinosaur out of money. He claims he can raise the dead. The plan is to pretend that Salty the parrot is dead and then have Victor say the magic words and bring him back to life. Easy enough. Unfortunately Salty doesn't realize that dead birds can't talk and the whole plan quickly falls apart.

Thoughts: This was a tricky subject to write a script about. The monty Python title only occurred to me after I had written 3/4ths of the script. The magic words that Victor used to raise the dead came from Thundercats: "Ancient Spirits of Evil, transform this decayed bird to Salty, the ever-living!"

Ad Libs/Blunders: A kid called out that John was performing Salty the Parrot. Then the kids explained how John's magic trick worked. Darn kids.

Overall: Fun script

Why aren't you watching The Mighty Boosh?

The Mighty Boosh is a quirky British comedy. It follows the adventures of the egotistical Howard Moon and the outrageous Vince Noir. They are usually accompanied by the enigmatic Naboo and Bolo the monkey. Basically if Monty Python and H.R. Pufnstuf had a kid it would look like this.

I've only seen six episodes. In those six episodes I've encountered Killeroos, Monkey Hell, Beta Max Tape Monsters, Coconut People, the moon, and people trapped in cabinets. Yes its weird, but its oh so funny.

Be warned that this show is not for kids and often contains adult humor.

The Mighty Boosh airs on Adult Swim Sunday's at 1 am and is available on demand and online.

Based on a true story

Most people don't know that George Lucas borrowed lots of his ideas for star wars from Flash Gordon and the Hidden Fortress. What you may not also know is that several of the ideas were based on real world events.
